Ian Potter – Partner at Wrigleys Solicitors  – Chair

Part 1 – November 5th at 11am

Dr Elizabeth Iveson – Consultant Physician at The Medical Cannabis Clinics will be speaking on the use and prescribing of medicinal cannabis, particularly looking at the contemporary challenges, changing the culture and views of the population on cannabis as a medical adjunct, using cannabis for clients with dual diagnoses (or not).

Part 2 – November 12th at 11am

Lucy Nicol – Partner at Irwin Mitchell will be speaking on challenges that the Deputy faces, and how case managers interface. Also how decisions which are ethically challenging are made, including CoP judgements. For example:  exploring capacity for drinking alcohol excessively vs choosing to want to live unsupported in the community, to drink and risking life.

Part 3 – November 20th at 11am

Stacey Bryant – Legal Director and Head of Court of Protection at Enable Law will present on dealing with the culture of chaos. So many of the families that case managers support live in what we might view as chaos, as their normal. Often case managers instinctively want to improve this or change things and have some thoughts about how to “fix” a situation. Discussing how to approach this without any overlay of your own thoughts and preconceptions, and truly understanding the clients “normal” life is a skill, with examples of challenging routines, beliefs, relationships or systems can be explored. Case managers are often best placed to know where the most effective rehab wins can be made whilst respecting a family culture.

Part 4 – 26th November at 11am

Dr Sarah Gillanders  -Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist at Case Management Services in Edinburgh will be presenting on self-identity after brain injury and how case managers can support clients in this regard. This is following her radio programme last year when she was interviewed by the BBC about her work with a client following brain tumour surgery: “The Vet with a New Brain” https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0008k32

Part 5 – December 3rd at 11am

Mathieu Culverhouse – Partner at Irwin Mitchell will be discussing the ethical challenges of supporting a client to engage the services of a sex worker. Covering topics such as human rights, capacity, disinhibition, the legal position, discretion, protecting others living in the environment/providing care.

Part 6 – December 10th – 11am

Celia Kitzinger -will discuss the subject of withdrawing CANH, ethical challenges, how to approach and navigate these. Often bringing the subject up for discussion as a professional can be difficult, and families don’t always know there are options. Challenges to medical professionals who do not understand best interests is also a difficult but frequently encounter.

Part 7 – December 17th 11am

Helen Steeple will be joined by her son Andrew providing a family perspective with a talk about their own emotional journey through end of life care.
