Overcoming and managing the effects of a brain injury is challenging, with life-long consequences and a wide range of support required.

Sports injuries contribute to a high incidence of brain injuries in the UK, ranging from a mild physical trauma and concussion to a severe traumatic brain injury.  Research now shows that the long-term impact of sport-related concussion is significant. 

Day 1: The BABICM conference looks at concussion in sport, with the experiences of well-known sports personalities who have overcome brain injury and discuss their paths to recovery.  Dawn Astle, the daughter of Jeffrey Astle, the English professional footballer, looks at how his success resulted in her father’s dementia.  Speakers also include Dr David Millar and Dr Michael Grey.

Evidence links brain injury to offending in young people and is a factor in the causes of homelessness. 

Day 2: The BABICM conference reviews the processes required to protect and address the health, well-being and human rights of individuals who have brain injuries and are homeless or find themselves in the criminal justice system.  The needs and support required for these individuals is discussed by speakers including Dr Mark Holloway and Professor Huw Williams.
