As of the 13th February 2020 BABICM Chair Angela Kerr has been appointed as Chair of the Institute of Registered Case Managers.  Angela supersedes Carole Chantler of CMSUK in her new role.

Since 2010 members of BABICM, CMSUK and VRA have been progressing the development of a professional body for case managers, working together to create a professional pathway for Case Managers in the UK.   The group collated evidence supporting the need for a professional pathway involving an educational framework and it was agreed that partnership between the three case management membership organisations would be the most effective way to implement it.

It was decided that PSA (Professional Standards Authority) would be the most suitable accreditation for the educational pathway which the Institute of Registered Case Managers (IRCM) would be regulated by. The group was split into working parties to focus on creating all the technical standards, policies and procedures for IRCM which will meet the PSA criteria.

Next steps:

Following the approval of all three Boards ( BABICM,CMSUK and VRA):

  • Create organisation standards, protocols and policies in line with PSA criteria
  • An application will be submitted to the PSA once their criteria has been met and demonstrated
  • A new company, has been established trading as the Institute of Registered Case Managers
  • An initial Vision and Mission has been agreed as:

Mission: To safeguard people who use case management services, by setting and upholding standards for registered case managers

Vision: We will be fair, proportionate and effective in administering a nationally recognised register, ensuring protection of service users and the public by promoting and upholding high standards of practice and ethical conduct for the case management profession.

Following advice obtained any new entity which would be a not for profit organisation and separate from the three main organisations, should be a company limited by guarantee. Such a structure allows rights of membership and would have a board inclusive of representatives of BABICM, CMSUK and VRA.

The official launch of the Institute of Registered Case Managers is planned for 2021 and will be headed by Angela Kerr Chair of BABICM, Deborah Edwards Chair of VRA and Karen Burgin Chair of CMSUK.
